Common errors
1. Syntactic Errors
1.1 Incorrect word order
The adverb 已经/已經 must appear before the main verb or verb phrase. Placing it after the verb (or between verb and object/aspect marker) results in an ungrammatical structure.
*我吃已经了饭。
我已经吃了饭。
我已经吃饭了。
*我吃已經了飯。
我已經吃了飯。
我已經吃飯了。
1.2 Incorrect use of negative adverbs
已经/已經 affirms that an action or state is in place. To negate an expectedly completed action (‘not yet done’), Mandarin normally uses 还没(有)/還沒(有) + verb, not 不.
*他不已经来了。
他还没来。
*他不已經來了。
他還沒來。
1.3 Missing aspect markers
With completed events, 已经/已經 typically appears with 了 (perfective) or 过/過 (experiential). Omitting the aspect marker can create ambiguity or make the sentence sound incomplete, especially in writing. With stative predicates (是 / 在 / 会 (會) / 懂 / 忙 etc.) or 已经不…/已經不… change-of-state statements, 了/过/過 may be unnecessary.
*我已经吃饭。
我已经吃饭了。
我已经吃过饭了。
*我已經吃飯。
我已經吃飯了。
我已經吃過飯了。
2. Semantic Errors
2.1 Misuse with habitual actions
已经/已經 is used to mark the completion of a specific event, not habitual or general actions. Learners sometimes use 已经/已經 to mean ‘always/usually’, which is the job of adverbs like 常常、每天、总是/總是.
*我已经每天吃早餐。
我每天都吃早餐。
我今天已经吃过早餐了。
*我已經每天吃早餐。
我每天都吃早餐。
我今天已經吃過早餐了。
2.2 Overuse with stative verbs
已经/已經 works best with eventive verbs (去、做完、到、找到了). With stative verbs (喜欢/喜歡、想、认识/認識), ‘已经/已經 + stative verb’ can sound unnatural unless it clearly signals a newly reached state or pairs with a duration.
*我已经喜欢中文。
我一直很喜欢中文。
我以前不喜欢中文,现在已经比较喜欢了。
*我已經喜歡中文。
我一直很喜歡中文。
我以前不喜歡中文,現在已經比較喜歡了。
2.3 Use without clear time reference
已经/已經 implies a contrast between before and now. If the verb phrase doesn’t show a result, onset, or time frame, the sentence feels incomplete.
*他已经工作。
他已经开始工作了。
他已经工作两年了。
他已经找到工作了。
*他已經工作。
他已經開始工作了。
他已經工作兩年了。
他已經找到工作了。
3. Errors caused by native transfer
3.1 Using 已经/已經 to mean ‘always/usually’
Learners may overgeneralize and use 已经/已經 for habits.
*我已经每天吃早餐。
我每天都吃早餐。
*我已經每天吃早餐。
我每天都吃早餐。
3.2 Direct transfer with stative verbs
In English it is possible to use ‘already + like/know’ but Chinese usually needs a change-of-state marker or a duration frame. Plain 已经/已經 + 喜欢(喜歡)/认识(認識) often sounds odd.
*我已经喜欢中文。
我已经喜欢上中文了。
*我已經喜歡中文。
我已經喜歡上中文了。
3.3 ‘Already + time noun‘ without 了
*已经十点。
已经十点了。
已经春天。
已经春天了。
*已經十點。
已經十點了。
已經春天。
已經春天了。
