Common errors
The modal particle 了, also known as sentence-final particle 了 because it is positioned at the end of the sentence, indicates a change of state as perceived by the speaker, such as the beginning of a new action or the emergence of a new situation. It draws the listener’s attention to a shift in conditions or events. It is also referred to as 了2 to distinguish it from the aspectual particle 了1.
1. Omission error
The learners might forget to add the modal particle 了2 in sentences with the aspectual particle 了1 and objects not preceded by a modifier. In this case, the sentence could be perceived as incomplete.
*我买了书,……
*我買了書,……
我买书了。
我買書了。
我买了书了。
我買了書了。
Learners might forget to use the modal particle 了2 in the structures 太……了 or 不……了.
*开始学中文的时候,我觉得很难,现在学了十年了,觉得不太难。
开始学中文的时候,我觉得很难,现在学了十年了,觉得不太难了。
*開始學中文的時候,我覺得很難,現在學了十年了,覺得不太難。
開始學中文的時候,我覺得很難,現在學了十年了,覺得不太難了。
2. Addition error
Learners might add 了2 at the end of sentences where it should be omitted. For example, when there is a time expression that serves as an adverb or adverb of time in a sentence indicating the continuation of the action, in such cases 了2 should not be used.
*她们刚刚大学毕业了。
她们刚刚大学毕业。
*弟弟一整天在家学习了。
弟弟一整天都在家学习。
*天气预报说明天下雨了。
天气预报说明天会下雨。
*她們剛剛大學畢業了。
她們剛剛大學畢業。
*弟弟一整天在家學習了。
弟弟一整天都在家學習。
*天氣預報說明天下雨了。
天氣預報說明天會下雨。
了2 should not be used in sentences where there are adverbs of time or frequency indicating the continuation of the action from the past to the present, such as 从来/從來 or 一直.
*我始终相信你了。
我始终相信你。
*我从来没吃过饺子了。
我从来没吃过饺子。
*我始終相信你了。
我始終相信你。
*我從來沒吃過餃子了。
我從來沒吃過餃子。
3. Confusion between the aspectual particle 了1 and the modal particle 了2
These particles share the same character, but they differ in position, meaning, and usage.
Position: In most cases, if 了 is not at the end of the sentence and comes right after a verb describing an action, often followed by a modified object or a complement, it functions as the aspectual particle 了1. If 了 is at the end of a sentence containing a verb (describing an action or a state), an adjectival predicate or a modal verb, but not placed directly after them, it functions as the modal particle 了2. If 了 comes right after a verb and is also at the end of the sentence, it could be either particle and its meaning depends on the context.
Meaning: The aspectual particle 了1 can indicate the occurrence or completion of an action or event, clarify the sequence of actions and events in a sentence, and mark a major event among others that are less important. The modal particle 了2 mainly conveys the meaning of a change of state.
Usage: The choice between these particles often depends on the context and the speaker’s intention. If the speaker wants to emphasise the completion of an action, they should use the aspectual particle 了1 right after the verb. If the speaker wants to report a new situation, they should use the modal particle 了2 at the end of the sentence.

However, sometimes both particles can be used in the same sentence to emphasize the completion of the action and the emergence of a new situation. If there is a time-measure complement and a verb indicating duration, the presence of the modal particle 了2 indicates that a certain portion of the action is complete but that the action is still continuing.
她学了一年汉语。
她學了一年漢語。
她学了一年汉语了。
她學了一年漢語了。
他吃了四个苹果。
他吃了四個蘋果。
他吃了四个苹果了。
他吃了四個蘋果了。
If the verb does not indicate duration, the modal particle 了2 emphasises the relevance of the action in the present or serves as confirmation that an action has been completed.
A: 爷爷死了多久?
A: 爺爺死了多久?
B: 爷爷死了三年。
B: 爺爺死了三年。
A: 你们为什么把爷爷的房子卖掉?
A: 你們爲什麼把爺爺的房子賣掉?
B: 爷爷死了三年了……
B: 爺爺死了三年了……
4. Confusion between the particles 了2 and 的
The modal particle 了2 and the structural particle 的 can be both placed at the end of the sentence. While 了2 can emphasizes the change of state, the emergence of a new situation or the occurrence of an action, the (是)……的 construction emphasizes certain details regarding the action, such as time, manner or place.
她昨天已经到这里了。
她昨天已經到這裏了。
她是昨天到这里的。
她是昨天到這裏的。
When expressing views or attitudes, the 太……了 construction is often used when the speaker expresses an exaggerated view or strong attitude towards something, like surprise, frustration or admiration. The (是)……的 construction focuses on factual information or details, without emphasising too much the speaker’s emotional reaction.
这件衣服太贵了!
這件衣服太貴了!
这件衣服(是)很贵的。
這件衣服(是)很貴的。
5. Contextually inappropriate usage
The modal particle 了2 plays an important pragmatic role. It is used to shift the listener’s focus or express the speaker’s intention, and it often draws the attention to a change of state or new situation. Because 了2 is context-dependent, learners might omit it when they should use it, failing to highlight important shifts or changes.
L1 Interference Errors
The words ‘become’, ‘now’ and ‘gotten’, often used in English to convey the sense of change, can be expressed by the modal particle 了2. However, sometimes English speakers may prefer to add superfluous words such as 现在/現在 or 变成/變成 in Chinese sentences with the modal particle 了2.
(现在)我弟弟是医生了。
(現在)我弟弟是醫生了。
*妹妹变成吃素了。
妹妹吃素了。
妹妹变成吃素的人了。
*妹妹變成吃素了。
妹妹吃素了。
妹妹變成吃素的人了。
