Ránhòu 然后/然後 is a conjunction meaning ‘and then’, used to indicate the sequence between two actions or states that occur in a close temporal sequence to each other. Yǐhòu 以后/以後 ‘after’ and hòulái 后来/後來 ‘later’ are both time nouns. Even though their meanings may appear similar, their usage differs significantly.
Differences
1. Difference between ránhòu 然后/然後 and hòulái 后来/後來
In terms of meaning, ránhòu 然后/然後 ‘and then’ is used to link two actions or states in a clear sequence, focusing on what happens next. Hòulái 后来/後來 indicates that the second action happens at a later time, often after a noticeable interval. When both actions have already taken place, ránhòu 然后/然後 emphasizes the order of events, while hòulái 后来/後來 emphasizes the time gap before the second event.

(The focus is placed on the order of actions, and a short time gap between the two events is implied.)

Wǒ xiān qù le túshūguǎn, hòulái qù le jiàoshì.

(The sequence is not emphasized; instead, the second event is presented as happening later, possibly after some time.)

In addition, ránhòu 然后/然後 can refer to past, present and future actions or states, while hòulái 后来/後來 refers only to actions or states already occurred in the past.

2. Difference between ránhòu 然后/然後 and yǐhòu 以后/以後
Ránhòu 然后/然後 is a conjunction meaning “and then”. It connects two clauses and highlights the order of two actions or states in a sequence. Yǐhòu 以后/以後 is a time noun meaning “after”. It introduces a time reference point and indicates that an event happens after that point. The reference point can be a specific time (e.g., “the weekend”), a duration (e.g., “one hour”), or another event (e.g., “eating”).

The placement also differs: ránhòu 然后/然後 is placed at the beginning of the second clause, while yǐhòu 以后/以後 is usually placed behind a time expression or at the end of a clause.
