Common errors

1. Syntactic Errors

1.1 Omitting 呢 in short follow-up questions

Learners may apply their native language rule for a tag question to Chinese and thereby omit 呢 at the end of the sentence.

*他喜欢游泳,你?

他喜欢游泳。你呢?

*他喜歡游泳,你?

他喜歡游泳。你呢?

1.2 Using 呢 instead of 吗/嗎 in neutral yes–no questions

Learners may put 呢 at the end of a neutral yes–no question instead of 吗/嗎, treating the two particles as interchangeable.

*你喜欢咖啡呢?
你喜欢咖啡吗?

*你喜歡咖啡呢?
你喜歡咖啡嗎?

2. Semantic Errors

2.1 Confusion with 吗 / 吧

Learners sometimes confuse 呢 with other final particles like 吗/嗎 or 吧. A typical mistake is combining them inappropriately and making the sentence redundant and ungrammatical.

*我们去看电影呢?
我们去看电影吗? (neutral question: are you willing?)
我们去看电影吧? (tentative suggestion)
他们去看电影了,(那)我们呢? (seeking opinions or contextual follow-up: e.g., after another group said they’re going)

*我們去看電影呢?
我們去看電影嗎? (neutral question: are you willing?)
我們去看電影吧? (tentative suggestion)
他們去看電影了,(那)我們呢? (seeking opinions or contextual follow-up: e.g., after another group said they’re going)

2.2 Treating 呢 as meaning ‘where’ in all cases

A noun phrase followed by 呢 does not always enquire about the location or whereabouts of some object. Sometimes it is understood that way from context; sometimes it serves as a follow-up question.

For example, a mother seeing her child playing a computer game would raise a question as below:

明天的考试呢?/ 明天的考試呢?

(In this context, the question here implies the mother is wondering why her child is not preparing for the exam.)

3. Pragmatic Errors

3.1 Overuse in written formal contexts

Learners may also overuse 呢 in written language. While it is common and useful in informal speech and writing (e.g. chats, personal emails), it is generally avoided in formal writing, such as academic essays or reports.

Errors caused by native transfer

1. Using 吗/嗎 for all questions because of ‘?’

Learners may treat 吗/嗎 as the default symbol for ‘?’ and avoid 呢, even where 呢 is the natural short or follow-up form.

*这是我的,那个吗?
这是我的,那个呢?

*這是我的,那個嗎?
這是我的,那個呢?

2. Confusing progressive 呢 with question 呢

Because English does not have one particle that marks both questions and progressives, learners may over-generalize one use of 呢 to the other. For beginners, it often helps to separate 呢 with 在…呢 for progressive statements vs. 吗/嗎 for neutral yes–no questions.
