Common errors

1. Syntactic error

Especially in more complex sentences, learners may struggle to place ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ correctly. These are some of the most common syntactical errors.

1.1 Incorrect position

Learners might place ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ before the verb.

*我一下(儿)介绍自己。/ *我一下(兒)介紹自己。

我介绍一下(儿)自己。/ 我介紹一下(兒)自己。

1.2 Incorrect position

Learners might place ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ after the object.

*我介绍自己一下(儿)。/ *我介紹自己一下(兒)。

我介绍一下(儿)自己。/ 我介紹一下(兒)自己。

2. Semantic error

2.1 Learners might confuse ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)‘ and ‘一点(儿)/一點(兒)’.

Both ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ and ‘一点(儿)/一點(兒)’ can mean ‘a bit‘, however their functions are different. ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ modifies a verb,  while ‘一点(儿)/一點(兒)’ modifies a noun or adjective.

喝一点(儿)水。/ 喝一點(兒)水。
Drink a little water.

This sentence focuses on the amount of water to drink and indicates that the person should drink a small amount of water.

喝一下(儿)水。/ 喝一下(兒)水。
Take a sip of water.

This sentence focuses on the duration of the action and indicates that the person should take a quick sip of water.

2.2 Learners might confuse ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)‘ and ‘一下(子)’

The usage of the verbal measure ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)‘ might be confused with the adverb ‘一下子’, which can be shortened to ’一下’. The adverb ‘一下子’ indicates something happens ‘all at once’, ‘suddenly’ or ‘quickly’.

看完了电影, 我一下(子)就哭了。/ 看完了電影, 我一下(子)就哭了。
After finishing the movie, I suddenly started crying.

哭一下(儿)。/ 哭一下(兒)。
Cry a bit.

In the sentences above ‘一下子’ indicates a sudden and immediate reaction, while the verbal measure ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ suggests a brief or momentary action.

2.3 Learners might confuse ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)‘ and ‘一会(儿)/一會(兒)’

’一下(儿)/一下(兒)‘  indicates a brief action, often used with verbs to suggest something done quickly, while ‘一会(儿)/一會(兒)‘ refers to a short but more extended duration, typically used to describe a period of time rather than the brief action itself.

你能等我一会(儿)吗?/ 你能等我一會(兒)嗎?
Can you wait for me for a minute?

请等一下(儿)。/ 請等一下(兒)。
Please wait a moment.

等一会(儿),我要去找老师,问一下(儿)老师的意见。 / 等一會(兒),我要去找老師,問一下(兒)老師的意見。
Wait a moment, I need to go find the teacher to ask for her opinion.

3. Pragmatic error or inappropriate usage

Learners might overuse or misuse ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ in contexts where it is unnecessary or wrong.

3.1 With reduplication of verbs

‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ and reduplication of verbs have similar usages but are not used together.

*我试试一下(儿)。/ *我試試一下(兒)。

我试一下(儿) or 我试试。/ 我試一下(兒) or 我試試。

3.2 With adjectives or stative verbs

While ‘一下(儿)/一下(兒)‘ is primarily used as a measure word for verbs describing actions to indicate a brief action, learners might sometimes attempt to use it with adjectives and stative verbs to convey the meaning of ‘a bit‘. However, this usage is not standard and can lead to errors.

’一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ is not typically used as a general modifier for adjectives or stative verbs. For describing slight or temporary states with adjectives or stative verbs, use ‘有点/有點’ or ‘一点(儿)/一點(兒)’.

*这个问题难一下(儿)。/ *這個問題難一下(兒)。
这个问题有点难。/ 這個問題有點難。

*你快一下(儿)!/ *你快一下(兒)!
你快一点(儿)!/ 你快一點(兒)!

Errors caused by native transfer

Both ’一下(儿)/一下(兒)’ and  ’一点(儿)/一點(兒)‘ translates into ‘a bit‘ in English, which can lead to confusion among learners about when to use each word correctly. Learners often use an ‘imitative’ approach, applying sentence structures from their native language directly to Chinese. This can result in errors such using ’一下(儿)/一下(兒)’  to modify adjectives or stative verbs.

Classroom activity

1

The teacher holds up a book and asks the students: 你们看过这本书吗?你们想看一下吗?/ 你們看過這本書嗎?你們想看一下嗎?

A couple of students answer. Depending on the level the teacher might encourage students to justify their answer:

Students: 我看过这本书,不想再看。我没看过,想看一下。/ 我看過這本書,不想再看。我沒看過,想看一下。

2

The teacher shows or writes a Chinese character on the board: 请你们写一下这个汉字。/ 請你們寫一下這個漢字。

The students all write the character.

The teacher now instructs the students to work in pairs. The teacher has prepared a set of prompt cards. Each card contains a different action that must be performed using 一下. Alternatively the teacher shows the different actions on the board. The actions could involve verbs like 看, 听/聽, 问/問 etc.

Prompts could include:

  • You are in a clothes shop and politely ask to try on a pair of trousers.
  • You are in a restaurant and ask if you can see the menu.
  • You politely ask an aquaintance if you can listen to a song on her phone.
  • You meet your new neighbour and ask if you can ask her name.
  • You ask a friend if you can take a sip of her tea.

Each pair receives a prompt.

Before the activity the teacher shows a prompt and gives an example, e.g.

Prompt: You are in a clothes shop and politely ask to try on a pair of trousers.

Student 1: 我可以试一下这条裤子吗?/ 我可以試一下這條褲子嗎?

Student 2: 可以,请试一下。/ 可以,請試一下。

Before beginning the activity the teacher asks: 你们有问题吗?你们可以问一下。/ 你們有問題嗎?你們可以問一下。

During the pair work the teacher circulates the room, listening to the students’ interactions and providing feedback or corrections as needed. After the pair work, the teacher calls on a few pairs to demonstrate their exchange in front of the class.
