Common errors

多 and 少 are adjectives, but when placed before a verb, they function as adverbs, modifying the verb to mean  ‘do more’ or ‘do less.’ Learners may mistakenly interpret 多 and 少 before a verb as modifiers of nouns, assuming they refer to the quantity of things, not the frequency or degree of action, resulting in both syntactic and semantic errors.

1. Incorrect position

Learners might place the verb before 多 or 少:

*我吃多水果。
我多吃水果。

*我吃多水果。
我多吃水果。

2. Confusing 多 or 少 for adjectives

2.1 Learners might use 很 before 多 or 少:

*我很多吃糖。
我多吃糖。

*我很多吃糖。
我多吃糖。

2.2 Learners might assume 多 and 少 refer to the quantity of things, not the frequency or degree of action.

*我想吃多水果。

*我想吃多水果。

我想吃很多水果。

我想吃很多水果。

I want to eat a lot of fruit.

我想多吃水果。

我想多吃水果。

I want to eat fruit more often/in greater amount.

3. Semantic uncertainty

多 can be used to modify frequency, as well as quantity and degree. Covering both ‘more intensely’ and ‘more often’:

多运动!

多運動!

Exercise more often! (Frequency)

多喝水!

多喝水!

Drink more water! (Degree)

Any ambiguity as to whether 多 is used about degree or frequency is usually clarified by context.

少’s default use is scaling down the action itself, that is, the amount or time spent. For expressing how often an action occurs 少 can be ambiguous and 不常 or 很少 are more commonly used. This might be confusing for learners:

少喝酒!

少喝酒!

Can mean either: Drink less alcohol! (Degree) or Drink alcohol less frequently! (Frequency)
To avoid ambiguity ‘不常喝酒!’ or ‘很少喝酒!’ is preferred for frequency.

4. Pragmatic error or inappropriate usage

Learners, especially beginners, might sometimes create grammatically correct but pragmatically odd sentences, especially when giving advice, requests or commands.

Using just 多 or 少 for requests might sound rude or impersonal:

多喝水!

多喝水!

Sounds more like scolding than an invitation to drink more water. If the latter meaning is intended, the tone can be softened, e.g. by using 点/點 or 请/請:

多喝点水!
请多喝水。

多喝點水!
請多喝水。

少说话!

少說話!

Sounds very blunt, the request can be softened by rephrasing the request to a question using ‘可以 … 一点吗’/一點嗎:

可以少说一点吗?

可以少說一點嗎?

L1 inference error

Learners might transfer the word order of English and use  多 and 少 after the verb or try to use 多 or 少 like a standalone object:

*学习多!
多学习!

*學習多!
多學習!

*我想多。

*我想多。

Wanting to say ‘I want (to eat) more‘.

我想多吃一点。

我想多吃一點。
