Common errors

Using incorrect numerals

In English and many other Western languages, large numbers are generally grouped in units of three digits (e.g., 15,000), whereas in Chinese they are grouped in units of four digits. As a result, learners often produce sentences like the following.

*30,000 = 三十千
30,000 = 三万

*30,000 = 三十千
30,000 = 三萬

Omitting 零 or adding extra 零 unnecessarily

When a zero appears in the middle of a number over 100, 零 must be inserted into the number. The word 零 should not be followed by unit terms such as 十, 百, or 千, 万/萬 and 亿/億. Students may omit 零 or add an unnecessary 零 to the number.

*2007=两千零零七
*2007=两千零百零十七
2007=两千零七

*50,300=五万零千三百
*50,300=五万三百
50,300=五万零三百

*2007=兩千零零七
*2007=兩千零百零十七
2007=兩千零七

*50,300=五萬零千三百
*50,300=五萬三百
50,300=五萬零三百

Using 十 instead of 一十 in numbers over 100

For numbers over 100, when the tens place falls between 10 and 19, the digit 一 must be explicitly included before 十. For example, 115 must be expressed as 一百一十五. If teachers do not explicitly point it out, students are very likely to make mistakes.

*317=三百十七
317=三百一十七

*2019=两千零十九
2019=两千零一十九

*317=三百十七
317=三百一十七

*2019=兩千零十九
2019=兩千零一十九

Classroom activity

1

The teacher gives each student a 3×3 “bingo sheet.”

2

The teacher chooses nine numbers, and students fill them into the squares themselves (the numbers are selected based on what the students have learned, such as 112, 305, 350, 6007, 1910, etc.).

3

Students take turns reading a number aloud.

4

When students hear a number, they cross it out on their own sheet.

5

The first student to complete three lines shouts “Bingo!”
