Common errors

1. Syntactic Errors

1.1 Omission of 的 in attributive usage

When 最 + adjective/verb modifies a noun, the structural particle 的 must be used to link the modifier to the noun. Without 的, the sentence is ungrammatical.

*这是我最喜欢书。
这是我最喜欢的书。

*這是我最喜歡書。
這是我最喜歡的書。

1.2 Incorrect position of 最

最 must appear before the adjective or verb it modifies. Placing it after the adjective/verb or at the end of the sentence is incorrect.

*他高最。
他最高。

*他高最。
他最高。

1.3 Adding 的 after a predicate with 最 when no noun follows

If ‘最 + adj’ stands as the predicate (without noun after it), 的 should not be added.

*他最高的。
他最高。
他是我们班最高的学生。

*他最高的。
他最高。
他是我們班最高的學生。

2. Semantic Errors

2.1 Confusion between 最 and 更

Learners may confuse 最 (superlative: “the most”) with 更 (comparative: “more”). In comparative 比 constructions, the correct word is 更, not 最. 最 is used when comparing more than two items and identifying the one with the highest degree.

*他比我们最高。
他比我们更高。 (We are all tall, but he is even taller than us.)
他是我们班最高的。 (He is the tallest in our class.)

*他比我們最高。
他比我們更高。 (We are all tall, but he is even taller than us.)
他是我們班最高的。 (He is the tallest in our class.)

2.2 Misinterpretation of 最好 as a superlative

Learners often read 最好 as ‘the best,’ but in recommendations or advice it means ‘had better’ expressing gentle obligation.

你最好现在走。/ 你最好現在走。(You’d better go now.)

Errors caused by native transfer

1. Inserting 是 before superlative predicate

From ‘He is the tallest’, learners may insert 是 directly before a superlative adjective.

*他是最高。
他最高。

*他是最高。
他最高。

2. Misusing 不最

When trying to say ‘X is not the one I like the most’, learners may produce 不最 + Verb / Adj, copying the logic of English ‘not the most….’

*我不最喜欢英语。
英语不是我最喜欢的。

*我不最喜歡英語。
英語不是我最喜歡的。

3. Omitting 的 after “最 + Adjective + 的 + Noun”

From English ‘the most famous place in Beijing’, learners may forget 的 between “最 + Adjective” and the noun.

*日本是我最喜欢国家。
日本是我最喜欢的国家。

*日本是我最喜歡國家。
日本是我最喜歡的國家。
