Common errors

1. Syntactic Errors

1.1 Incorrect word order

一块(儿)/一塊(兒) or 一起 is a preverbal scope adverb and must appear before the main verb or verb phrase. Learners sometimes treat 一起 as if it were a prepositional phrase or sentence-final complement and place it after the verb or at the end of the clause, which is ungrammatical.

*我们去一起商店。
我们一起去商店。

*他和我去图书馆一起。
他和我一起去图书馆。

*我們去一起商店。
我們一起去商店。

*他和我去圖書館一起。
他和我一起去圖書館。

1.2 Wrong placement of negation

Negation marker 不/没(沒) should come before 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) or 一起, not after.

*我们一起不去。
我们不一起去。

*我們一起不去。
我們不一起去。

2. Semantic Errors

2.1 Omission or misuse of 一起 or 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) in coordinated structures

In sentences with multiple subjects, learners sometimes omit 一起 or 一块(儿)/一塊(兒), assuming that ‘together’ is already clear from forms like ‘我和姐姐…’. However, without an explicit scope adverb, the sentence only states that both people did the action, not necessarily that they did it together at the same time. 一起 or 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) makes shared participation explicit.

我和姐姐看电影。
(My sister and I watched a movie. – no ‘together’ is explicitly stated; they both watched, but possibly not in the same place/time.)

我和姐姐一起看电影。
(My sister and I watched a movie together.)

我和姐姐看電影。

我和姐姐一起看電影。

Learners may also substitute 都 for 一起 or 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) because both appear with multiple subjects. However, 都 only emphasizes that all members of the group do the action, while 一起 or 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) emphasizes that they do it jointly (same time / same situation).

我们都去看电影。
(We all go/went to see a movie – possibly at different times.)
我们一起去看电影。
(We go/went to see a movie together – same time, same outing.)
我们都一起去看电影。
(We all go / went to see a movie together. Same time, same outing, as a group.)

我們都去看電影。

我們一起去看電影。

我們都一起去看電影。

2.2 Misinterpretation of shared subject

Learners may assume that 一起 always implies ‘physically in the same place’. In reality, 一起 can mean shared time, shared space, both, or even neither. Teachers should raise learners’ awareness of this semantic flexibility.

我们一起做作业。/我們一起做作業。(This sentence can mean ‘we did our homework at the same time’ or ‘we did it at the same place,’ or both, depending on context.)

我们一起做一份报告。/我們一起做一份報告。(This sentence can describe working on the report at the same time, in the same place, or dividing the work at different times.)

2.4 Confusing the two negation positions

With 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) and 一起, the position of 不/没 changes the meaning. Learners sometimes mix these two patterns and say a sentence that is grammatical but does not match what they want to say.

The position of 不/没 with 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) and 一起 changes what is being negated. When 不/没 comes before 一块(儿)/一塊(兒) and 一起, as in 我们不一起去上课/我們不一起去上課, the negation focuses on ‘together’. The meaning is ‘we are not going to the class together; we go separately.’ When 不/没 comes after 一起, as in 我们一起不去上课/我們一起不去上課, the group ‘together‘ is kept, and the negation focuses on the action of going. The meaning is we, together, are not going.’ Learners may confuse these two patterns and say 我们一起不去上课/我們一起不去上課 when they actually want to say 我们不一起去上课/我們一起去上課.

3. Pragmatic Errors

3.1 Overusing 一块(儿) in formal writing

一块(儿)/一塊(兒) is colloquial and typically used in informal spoken Chinese. In more formal contexts, 一起 is more appropriate. Learners may overgeneralize 一块儿/一塊兒 without recognizing its register-specific use.

本次会议中,我们一块儿讨论相关议题。(‘一块儿’ lowers the formality and makes the sentence sound awkward.)

本次會議中,我們一塊兒討論相關議題。

本次会议中,我们一起讨论相关议题。

本次會議中,我們一起討論相關議題。

Errors caused by native transfer

1. Replying on ‘and’ to express ‘together’

Learners may assume X 和 Y  already means ‘together’ and omit 一起 or 一块儿/一塊兒. The sentence then only states that both people did the action, not that they joined in the same activity.

我和姐姐看电影。

My older sister and I watch a movie. (may be understood as just both of them watched, not necessarily together)

我和姐姐看電影。

2. Treating 一起 as ‘physically in the same place or at the same time only’

Learners may use 都 where 一起 or 一块儿/一塊兒 is needed, or think 都 already means ‘together’.

我们都去看电影。

(could be different times or places)

我們都去看電影。

3. Wrong position of 一起

In English, ‘together’ is usually placed after the verb or at the end of the sentence (‘We watch the movie together’, ‘I play together with my sister’). In Chinese, 一起 or 一块(儿)/一塊兒 comes right after the actors (subjects / coordinated noun phrases) and before the verb phrase.

*我们去商店一起。
我们一起去商店。

*我們去商店一起。
我們一起去商店。
