Common errors
The pattern 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… ‘… while… at the same time’ expresses two simultaneous actions performed by the same subject or, sometimes, by different subjects. It forms a coordinate compound sentence composed of two parallel clauses, each carrying information of equal importance.
1. Incorrect position
The learners may incorrectly place the subject after 一边/一邊.
*一边他吃饭,一边看报纸。
他一边吃饭,一边看报纸。
*一邊他吃飯,一邊看報紙。
他一邊吃飯,一邊看報紙。
2. Confusion between 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… and 又……又……
Both patterns 又……又…… ‘both… and…’ and 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… ‘… while… at the same time’ describe two actions performed by the same subject, but their meanings can differ. 又……又…… connects two parallel qualities, states, or actions occurring within the same broad timeframe, without requiring exact overlap, similar to ‘both A and B’. 一边……一边…… strictly denotes two ongoing actions happening simultaneously, often with deliberate multitasking.
The pattern 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… cannot be used with verbs describing a state, a will or an ability.
It also cannot be used with adjectives or with verb phrases describing the subject’s identity or state, such as those introduced by the verbs 是, 有 or 当/當.
*这双鞋一边舒服一边便宜。
这双鞋又舒服又便宜。
*他一边是英国人一边是意大利人。
他又是英国人又是意大利人。
*這雙鞋一邊舒服一邊便宜。
這雙鞋又舒服又便宜。
*他一邊是英国人一邊是意大利人。
他又是英国人又是意大利人。
In some contexts, both structures are possible but with a different emphasis: 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… stresses that two actions occur at the same time, while 又……又…… simply indicates that both actions having been done altogether, regardless of whether they happened simultaneously or not.
在中国时,我姐姐又学习又打工。
在中國時,我姐姐又學習又打工。
在中国时,我姐姐一边学习一边打工。
在中國時,我姐姐一邊學習一邊打工。
3. Confusion between the use of 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… and V1 着/著 V2
Learners may overuse the pattern 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… whenever a sentence contains two verb phrases. As a result, they may assume that all sentences with the structure V1 着/著 V2 can be freely transformed into the 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… pattern, which leads to errors in certain contexts.
他哭着打电话。
他一边哭,一边打电话。
他哭著打電話。
他一邊哭,一邊打電話。
When the first action followed by 着/著 describes the manner of the second one, for example with verbs such as 站, 躺, 坐, etc., the sentence cannot be transformed with the pattern 一边/一邊……一边/一邊……
*老师一边站一边上课。
老师站着上课。
*老師一邊站一邊上課。
老師站著上課。
*妹妹一边躺一边看书。
妹妹躺着看书。
*妹妹一邊躺一邊看書。
妹妹躺著看書。
In general, 一边/一邊……一边/一邊…… is used when both actions are dynamic and can be carried out independently in parallel. By contrast, in V1 /著 V2 constructions, V1 often describes a posture, state, or manner that accompanies V2, rather than a separate, ongoing action.
4. Pragmatic errors or inappropriate usage
The learners may forget that the simultaneity expressed by this pattern may extend over a relatively long period of time, during which the subject performs two ongoing activities in parallel.
在中国时,我姐姐一边学习一边打工。
在中國時,我姐姐一邊學習一邊打工。
The learners may mistakenly use this pattern with verbs expressing will or psychological activity, or with verbs describing the subject’s identity or state, such as 是, 有 or 当/當. In these cases, the patterns 又……又 or ……, 也…… must be used.
