The adverb 只 is used to express restriction or exclusivity. While conceptually simple, its correct placement and use in context present frequent challenges for beginners.
Common errors
1. Incorrect position
Learners might place 只 after the verb.
*我喝只茶。
我只喝茶。
*我喝只茶。
我只喝茶。
1.2 Learners might place 只 before adverbs of e.g. frequency.
*我只常常吃米饭。
我常常只吃米饭。
*我只常常吃米飯。
我常常只吃米飯。
2. Uncertainty about the different connotations of placing 只 before or after a prepositional phrase
只 modifies different constituents depending on placement. Learners might not be aware of the different connotations implied when 只 is placed before or after a prepositional phrase. For beginners, it might be best to focus and the first and most common position.
我只在图书馆学习。
我只在圖書館學習。
我在图书馆只学习。
我在圖書館只學習。
3. Overuse of 只 where restriction is not contextually needed
只 adds emphasis or limitation and overusing it can make the speaker sound overly categorical or inflexible.
If there is no context suggesting a contrast, using 只 can come off as overly restrictive or abrupt.
我只喝水。
我只喝水。
A direct restriction like this can be seen as too blunt or rude unless explained politely. A more polite choice could be the same sentence without 只.
我喝水。
我喝水。
In the next example, 只 adds emphasis that may sound overly modest or insecure in casual speech.
我只会说一点中文。
我只會說一點中文。
只 is more acceptable in formal or humble contexts. Unless the speaker intends to sound insecure or overly modest, the same sentence without 只 would again be a better choice.
我会说一点中文。
我會說一點中文。
Learning tip
Start by telling the students about situations where the emphasis on restriction or limitation indicated by 只 might be inappropriate. Give examples of where the use of 只 comes across as impolite or unkind, being too blunt, picky, or dismissive or in other situations as too modest or defensive.
Set up different contexts each with a syntactically and semantically correct sentence with 只.
Have the students discuss whether the use of 只 is appropriate in each of the situations.
Create a shared box with headings like ‘polite,’ ‘too blunt,’, ‘neutral,’ etc. and have the students categorise each sentence with 只 under a heading.
Depending on the students’ level, they can try make alternative sentences for the ones deemed inappropriate.
L1 inference error
Learners often use an ‘imitative’ approach, applying sentence structures from their native language directly to Chinese. This can result in errors, such as placing 只 directly in front of the object.
*我喝只茶。
我只喝茶。
*我喝只茶。
我只喝茶。
