Common errors

1. Incorrect position

The basic word order of a comparison with 比 is somewhat different from the English equivalent using ‘more than’. This might lead to syntactic errors.

1.1 Learners might place the adjective denoting the property being compared before ‘比’ and its prepositional phrase.

*弟弟高比哥哥。
弟弟比哥哥高。

*弟弟高比哥哥。
弟弟比哥哥高。

1.2 Learners might place the negation adverb in the wrong position.

*弟弟比哥哥不高。
弟弟不比哥哥高。

*弟弟比哥哥不高。
弟弟不比哥哥高。

1.3 When measuring the difference in the property being compared, learners might place the quantitative complement in front of 比 or the adjective, instead of after the adjective.

*你三岁比我大。
*你比我三岁大。
你比我大三岁。

*你三歲比我大。
*你比我三歲大。
你比我大三歲。

2.  Using an adverb of degree in front of ‘比’ or the adjective denoting the property being compared, when modifying the comparison.

*弟弟有点儿比哥哥高。
*弟弟比哥哥有点儿高。
弟弟比哥哥高一点儿。

*弟弟有點兒比哥哥高。
*弟弟比哥哥有點兒高。
弟弟比哥哥高一點兒。

*弟弟很比哥哥高。
*弟弟比哥哥很高。
弟弟比哥哥高得多。

*弟弟很比哥哥高。
*弟弟比哥哥很高。
弟弟比哥哥高得多。

3. Confusing different patterns of comparison

3.1 Learners might use different patterns of comparison in the same sentence.

*弟弟比哥哥一样高。
弟弟比哥哥高。

*弟弟比哥哥一樣高。
弟弟比哥哥高。

3.2. Confusing 比 and 比较: The preposition 比 and the adverb 比较 both carry the meaning ‘compare’ and learners might mistakenly use 比较 instead of 比, however as an adverb 比较 cannot take an object.

*弟弟比较哥哥高。
弟弟比哥哥高。
哥哥比较高。

*弟弟比較哥哥高。
弟弟比哥哥高。
哥哥比較高。

4. Overuse of ‘比’

Learners might keep ‘比’ in a negated comparison with ‘没有’.

*弟弟没有比哥哥高。
弟弟没有哥哥高。

*弟弟沒有比哥哥高。
弟弟沒有哥哥高。
