Explanations
Some verbs can be reduplicated (said twice in a row) to show that an action is casual – less intensive, less demanding, shorter, lighter, or tentative. This pattern is especially common in spoken Chinese. Verb reduplication is often close to English expressions such as “have a quick look,” “try it a bit,” or “do it for a while.”
Verb reduplication often makes a request, invitation, or suggestion sound more polite, relaxed, or friendly, and less like a strong command. The meaning of the verb does not change, but the speaker’s attitude to the action becomes softer.
Structure
Basic structure
1. Short follow-up or tag-like questions
The reduplication pattern depends mainly on the number of syllables and the internal structure of the verb. For monosyllabic verbs, the second syllable in the reduplicated form is usually pronounced in a neutral tone (e.g., kànkan 看看). For disyllabic verbs, reduplication is only possible with certain verbs, and the tone pattern may vary depending on the verb.
1. For a monosyllabic verb, the verb can simply be repeated (AA). For example, the verb kàn 看 ‘to see; watch; read’, can be reduplicated to kànkan 看看.
Note: A common variant is A yī一A, where yī 一 is inserted between the two verbs. It has a meaning very similar to AA, for example: shì yí shì 试一试 ‘give a try’.
2. Disyllabic verbs (for example xīuxí 休息 ‘to take a rest ’, yùndòng 运动 ‘to do exercise’, rènshì 认识 ‘to know someone’) are reduplicated in an ABAB format (for example xīuxi xīuxi 休息休息, yùndòng yùndòng 运动运动,rènshì rènshì 认识认识 ).
3. If a disyllabic verb has a verb + object (V+O) structure (for example, sàn bù 散步 ‘to take a walk’, liáo tiān 聊天 ‘to chat’, chàng gē 唱歌 ‘to sing’, dǎ qiú 打球 ‘play ball games’), only the verb part is reduplicated, adding the object at the end, in an AAB pattern. For example, for the word sàn bù 散步, the duplicated form is sànsàn bù 散散步.
Note: To express completion, le 了 is placed after the first verb in AA and AAB patterns, and it is not used in ABAB pattern.
The most common verb-reduplication patterns are shown in the following table:
| Pattern | Structure | Example |
| AA | Verb + Verb | Kànkan 看看 |
| A一A | Verb + yī 一 + Verb | Kàn yí kàn 看一看 |
| A了A | Verb + le 了 + Verb | Kàn le kàn 看了看 |
| ABAB | Disyllabic Verb + Reduplication | Xīuxi xīuxi 休息休息 |
| AAB | Vv + Vv + Vobj | Sànsàn bù 散散步 |
Note: Not all verbs are reduplicable. Usually, action verbs can be reduplicated, but modal verbs (yào 要 ‘to want’, néng 能 ‘to be able to’, huì 会 ‘to be able to’), stative verbs (xǐhuān 喜欢 ‘to like’、yǒu 有 ‘to have’), and many verbs expressing states, possession, modality, or clear results (juédìng 决定 ‘to decide’) normally cannot undergo reduplication.
Negation
Verb reduplication is mainly used in positive sentences. Negative sentences usually use the basic verb, for example: bú kàn 不看 ‘don’t look/watch/read’, méi kàn 没看 ‘didn’t look/watch/read’, bù xiǎng qù sàn bù 不想去散步 ‘don’t want to take a walk’.
Question
A yes–no question is formed by adding the sentence particle ma 吗 at the end of the declarative sentence with a reduplicated verb.
An alternative question is formed by adding háishì 还是 ‘or’ between two reduplicated verbs or verb phrases.
Functions
1. Expressing casualness, briefness or trial
Reduplication expresses that the action is short, tentative, or exploratory (i.e., just trying), not something done for a long duration or with a serious, deliberate attitude.
2. Softening tone or expressing politeness
Verb reduplication is often used to make a request, invitation, or suggestion sound friendlier and less imposing, especially in spoken usage. It helps the speaker sound mild and considerate, so the listener does not feel pushed or ordered.
3. Creating a relaxed or casual mood
Verb reduplication can also show that an action is done in a light, casual way, often to make the situation feel more relaxed or informal.
