Common errors

马上/馬上 ‘immediately, right away, at once’, ‘first’, and 有时/有時 ‘sometimes’ are adverbs of time.

1. Incorrect position

The learners may not be clear about the position of 马上/馬上 and in a sentence and place them before the subject or after the verb. The instructor should remind learners that these two adverbs should precede the verb they modify.

2. Omission

In negative sentences, time adverbs like 马上/馬上 and often sound incomplete by themselves. This is because negation of such sentences usually requires a reason, condition, or result, and lacking such elements above would make the sentence sound unclear or unnatural. To make the meaning complete, speakers usually add a modal verb (to show ability, intention, or choice) or an extra clause (to explain the reason or consequence).
