Common Errors

The adverb 才 expresses a subsequent sequence between two events or indicates that something happens later, slower, or with a greater effort or quantity than expected.

1. Omission error

In a sentence indicating an completed event, learners may forget to place a completed action marked by 了 before 才.

我等一会儿才告诉你。

我等一會兒才告訴你。

I will tell you after a while.
(I am not going to tell you until later.)

我等了一会儿才告诉你。

我等了一會兒才告訴你。

I told you after waiting for a while.
(I already told you, but not immediately but later than expected.)

2. Addition error

Learners may sometimes add the sentence-final modal particle 了2 after a 才 construction. This usage needs to be handled carefully, because its acceptability depends on what 了 refers to, not simply on the presence of 才. 了2 may appear after, for example, to mark a new state.

他给我解释我才明白。
他给我解释我才明白了。

他給我解釋我才明白。
他給我解釋我才明白了。

By contrast, in value-based 才 constructions (e.g. age, time, quantity), 了2 is generally avoided. This is because 才 evaluates an actual result by comparing it with the speaker’s expectation (e.g. later, fewer, or more effort than expected). 了2, on the other hand, highlights a newly formed state. When both particles refer to the same event, they often create pragmatic tension and sound unnatural.

*他才三岁了。
他才三岁。
他三岁了。

*他才三歲了。
他才三歲。
他三歲了。

*我第四次才通过考试了。
我第四次才通过考试。

*我第四次才通過考試了。
我第四次才通過考試。

Some native speakers may occasionally use 了2 after value + 才 in emotional or narrative contexts. However, this usage is highly context-dependent.

*他做了饭才看电影了。
他做了饭才看电影。

*他做了飯才看電影了。
他做了飯才看電影。

才 never follows negation adverbs.

3.  Confusion in expressing smaller or larger quantity

When 才 follows a quantity, it implies that the value is more than expected. In contrast, when 才 precedes a verb followed by a quantity, it emphasizes that the quantity is less than expected.

妹妹五百块钱才买了这件衣服。

妹妹五百塊錢才買了這件衣服。

My younger sister had to spend as much as 500 yuan just to buy this piece of clothing.

这件衣服很好看!你才花了一百块钱。

這件衣服很好看!你才花了一百塊錢。

This piece of clothing looks great! You only spent 100 yuan.

4. Confusion in expressing later or earlier time

When a time reference is present, its position changes the meaning: if placed before 才, it implies that the action occurred or was completed later than expected; if placed after 才, it implies that the action occurred or was completed earlier than expected.

你上午十点半才上班。

你上午十點半才上班。

You don’t start work until 10:30 in the morning.
(The speaker considers 10:30 a.m. relatively late for starting work.)

我上班的时候才早上七点半!

我上班的時候才早上七點半!

When I start work, it’s only 7:30 a.m.!
(The speaker considers 7:30 a.m. relatively early for starting work.)

5. Confusion between 才 and 就

Both 就 and 才 can link two verb phrases to show that one event happens after another. However, they express opposite temporal relations: 就 indicates that the second action happens ‘right after’ the first, with a short interval; 才 indicates that the second action happens ‘only after’ the first, with a long or unexpected interval.

他做完作业就来到我家了。

他做完作業就來到我家了。

He came to my place right after he finished his homework.

他做完作业才来到我家。

他做完作業才來到我家。

He didn’t come to my place until after he had finished his homework. / He came to my place only after he had finished his homework.

When 了 appears at the end of the sentence after 就, it indicates that the action following 就 has also already taken place. In contrast, the verb phrase after 才 usually does not take the modal particle 了 at the end of the sentence, because the action after it is often perceived as having already occurred within the sequence of events.

等了一会儿,医生就来了。

等了一會兒,醫生就來了。

After waiting a short while, the doctor came.

等了很久,医生才来。

等了很久,醫生才來。

The doctor only came after a long wait.

Note that, in some cases, native speakers may also add the modal particle 了 at the end of the sentence after 才. While 了 is generally perceived as not required after 才, its presence is sometimes used to highlight the resulting change of state or to emphasize that the outcome has now occurred.

爷爷吃了药才好(了)。

爺爺吃了藥才好(了)。

Grandpa only got better after taking the medicine (and now he is better).
