HSK2 TBCL2

Common Errors

The adverb expresses a subsequent sequence between two events or indicates that something happens later, slower, or with a greater effort or quantity than expected.

1. Omission error

In a sentence indicating an completed event, learners may forget to place a completed action marked by 了 before .

我等一会儿告诉你。

我等一會兒告訴你。

I will tell you after a while.
(I am not going to tell you until later.)

我等一会儿告诉你。

我等一會兒告訴你。

I told you after waiting for a while.
(I already told you, but not immediately but later than expected.)

2. Addition error

Learners may sometimes add the sentence-final modal particle 了2 after a construction. This usage needs to be handled carefully, because its acceptability depends on what 了 refers to, not simply on the presence of . 了2 may appear after, for example, to mark a new state.

他给我解释我明白。
他给我解释我明白

他給我解釋我明白。
他給我解釋我明白

By contrast, in value-based constructions (e.g. age, time, quantity), 了2 is generally avoided. This is because evaluates an actual result by comparing it with the speaker’s expectation (e.g. later, fewer, or more effort than expected). 了2, on the other hand, highlights a newly formed state. When both particles refer to the same event, they often create pragmatic tension and sound unnatural.

*他三岁
三岁。
他三岁

*他三歲
三歲。
他三歲

*我第四次通过考试
我第四次通过考试。

*我第四次通過考試
我第四次通過考試。

Some native speakers may occasionally use 了2 after value + in emotional or narrative contexts. However, this usage is highly context-dependent.

*他做了饭看电影了。
他做了饭看电影。

*他做了飯看電影了。
他做了飯看電影。

never follows negation adverbs.

3.  Confusion in expressing smaller or larger quantity

When follows a quantity, it implies that the value is more than expected. In contrast, when precedes a verb followed by a quantity, it emphasizes that the quantity is less than expected.

妹妹五百块钱买了这件衣服。

妹妹五百塊錢買了這件衣服。

My younger sister had to spend as much as 500 yuan just to buy this piece of clothing.

这件衣服很好看!你花了一百块钱。

這件衣服很好看!你花了一百塊錢。

This piece of clothing looks great! You only spent 100 yuan.

4. Confusion in expressing later or earlier time

When a time reference is present, its position changes the meaning: if placed before , it implies that the action occurred or was completed later than expected; if placed after , it implies that the action occurred or was completed earlier than expected.

你上午十点半上班。

你上午十點半上班。

You don’t start work until 10:30 in the morning.
(The speaker considers 10:30 a.m. relatively late for starting work.)

我上班的时候早上七点半!

我上班的時候早上七點半!

When I start work, it’s only 7:30 a.m.!
(The speaker considers 7:30 a.m. relatively early for starting work.)

5. Confusion between 才 and 就

Both 就 and can link two verb phrases to show that one event happens after another. However, they express opposite temporal relations: 就 indicates that the second action happens ‘right after’ the first, with a short interval; indicates that the second action happens ‘only after’ the first, with a long or unexpected interval.

他做完作业来到我家了。

他做完作業來到我家了。

He came to my place right after he finished his homework.

他做完作业来到我家。

他做完作業來到我家。

He didn’t come to my place until after he had finished his homework. / He came to my place only after he had finished his homework.

When 了 appears at the end of the sentence after 就, it indicates that the action following 就 has also already taken place. In contrast, the verb phrase after usually does not take the modal particle 了 at the end of the sentence, because the action after it is often perceived as having already occurred within the sequence of events.

等了一会儿,医生

等了一會兒,醫生

After waiting a short while, the doctor came.

等了很久,医生来。

等了很久,醫生來。

The doctor only came after a long wait.

Note that, in some cases, native speakers may also add the modal particle 了 at the end of the sentence after . While 了 is generally perceived as not required after , its presence is sometimes used to highlight the resulting change of state or to emphasize that the outcome has now occurred.

爷爷吃了药好(了)。

爺爺吃了藥好(了)。

Grandpa only got better after taking the medicine (and now he is better).
