Omission of 所以 in the second clause
When the first clause contains 因为/因為, the second clause must be initiated with 所以. Learners may overlook this point, leading to errors.
*因为天气太冷,我不去。
因为天气太冷,所以我不去。
*因为我学中文,我会说中文。
因为我学中文,所以我会说中文。
*因為天氣太冷,我不去。
因為天氣太冷,所以我不去。
*因為我學中文,我會說中文。
因為我學中文,所以我會說中文。
Errors caused by native transfer
When expressing cause-and-effect relationships in English, usually only one connective is needed, such as “because” or “therefore/so.” However, in Chinese, the structure 因为/因為…所以… is commonly used as a paired construction, and having both parts is correct. Native speakers of English may overlook this due to the influence of English.
Classroom activity
The teacher prepares several word cards with sentences, for example:
我很累
我不喜欢运动/我不喜歡運動
我爱吃中国菜/我愛吃中國菜
The teacher asks students to take turns drawing a card, reading the sentence aloud, and inviting another student to ask for further explanation and summarise according to the given reason. For example:
Student 1: 我很累。
Student 2:你为什么很累/你為什麼很累?
Student 1: 因为我睡得不好/因為我睡得不好。
Student 2:我懂了。你很累,因为你睡得不好/我懂了。你很累,因為你睡得不好 or 因为你睡得不好,所以你很累/因為你睡得不好,所以你很累。
