Functions

1. Duō 多 asking about degree or extent

Duō ‘how’ is used to ask about the degree or extent of someone or something, such as for size, weight, or length. It is used with qualitative adjectives which identify qualities that someone or something has.

Zhuōzi yǒu duō cháng?
How long is the table?

When asking about measure or degree,  duō ‘how’ is used with positive adjectives that suggest large extents, for example: gāo  ‘tall, high’, ‘big’, kuài ‘fast’, yuǎn / ‘far’, zhòng ‘heavy’. It is rather not used with the adjectives that denote small degrees, such as: ǎi ‘short, low’, xiǎo ‘small’, màn ‘slow’, jìn ‘near’, qīng /‘light’. Exceptions are these pairs of adjectives: lěng ‘cold’, 热/熱 ‘hot’, and pàng ‘fat’, shòu ‘thin’.
