Word order errors involving 不但 and the subject
When the two clauses have different subjects, 不但 should be placed at the beginning of the first clause. Learners sometimes mistakenly place 不但 after the subject, resulting in an ungrammatical sentence.
*王先生不但爱打篮球，而且李小姐也爱打篮球。
不但王先生爱打篮球，（而且）李小姐也爱打篮球。
*王先生不但愛打籃球，而且李小姐也愛打籃球。
不但王先生愛打籃球，（而且）李小姐也愛打籃球。
Omission of the modal verb in the second clause
If a modal verb appears in the first clause, it must also be repeated in the second clause. Some learners fail to include the modal verb in the second clause, resulting in grammatically incomplete sentences.
*他不但会说英文，而且说中文。
他不但会说英文，而且会说中文。
*爸爸不但想学打网球，而且学打篮球。
爸爸不但想学打网球，而且也想学打篮球。
*他不但會說英文，而且說中文。
他不但會說英文，而且會說中文。
*爸爸不但想學打網球，而且學打籃球。

Native English speakers, when using 不但… 而且, may be influenced by the English conjunction “but also” and use the wrong conjunction“但是”.
* 她不但很漂亮，但是也很聪明。
她不但很漂亮，而且也很聪明。
* 她不但很漂亮，但是也很聰明。
她不但很漂亮，而且也很聰明。
Furthermore, since 不但… 而且 expresses a progressive relationship (where the second clause goes a step further than the first), the character也is often added in the second clause for emphasis.
Influenced by the fixed structure of the English translation, learners may omit the 也. This omission can lead to grammatical errors, especially when the subjects are different.
*不但妈妈喜欢吃中国菜，而且爸爸喜欢。
不但妈妈喜欢吃中国菜，（而且）爸爸也喜欢。
*不但媽媽喜歡吃中國菜，而且爸爸喜歡。
不但媽媽喜歡吃中國菜，（而且）爸爸也喜歡。
Classroom activity
Before class, the teacher prepares several topic cards for students to draw from. Each student picks one card and makes a sentence using “not only… but also…”.
For example:
我最喜欢的饭馆

我的同学

这个城市
這個城市
The teacher can also say the first half of a sentence with “not only,” and have students complete the second half. For example:
Teacher：
中国菜不但中国人喜欢…
中國菜不但中國人喜歡…
Student：

中國菜不但中國人喜歡，外國人也喜歡。
Teacher：
