Common errors
1. Incorrect position
1.1 不 comes before the verb or adjective it negates, but beginners sometimes place it incorrectly, especially after the verb or before the subject:
*小李吃不鱼。
*不小李吃鱼。
小李不吃鱼。
*小李吃不魚。
*不小李吃魚。
小李不吃魚。
1.2 Unless there is a special semantic reason, 不 is placed in front of the modal and not the main verb. Learners might miss the modal verb and place 不 in front of the main verb:
*小李想不吃鱼。
*小李想不吃魚。
小李不想吃鱼。
小李不想吃魚。
1.3 In most sentences 不 is placed after other adverbs, however learners might place the adverb after 不:
*这本书不也好。
这本书也不好。
*這本書不也好。
這本書也不好。
2. Confusing 不 with other negation adverbs
Chinese uses different negation adverbs for different contexts. While 不 is the most common negation adverb, it cannot always be used and this might confuse learners, especially beginners and lead to confusing 不 with other negation adverbs.
2.1 不 is generally used to negate actions and states in the present. An exception being the verb 有. Learners might use 不:
* 我不有狗。
我没有狗。
* 我不有狗。
我沒有狗。
2.2 Learners might use 不 to negate completed or past actions, instead of 没 (有):
E.g. to negate the sentence 昨天我去公园了 learners might mistakenly use 不:
*昨天我不去公园。
昨天我没去公园。
*昨天我不去公園。
昨天我沒去公園。
2.3 不 is a general negation, not suitable in imperatives. Learners might mistakenly use 不 instead of 别:
*不吃太多!
别吃太多!
*不吃太多!
別吃太多!
*请不开玩笑。
请别开玩笑。
*請不開玩笑。
請別開玩笑。
3. Overusing 不
3.1 Overusing 不 alone. While it can occur alone at the beginning of a denial, it sounds polite to be followed by either the negated verb or adjective or a contrastive statement.
3.2 In grammatically correct sentences, some uses of 不 may be overly direct and for some sound rude:
你要吃蛋糕吗?
你要吃蛋糕嗎?
我不要 or 不要吃 are very direct answers and for some may come across as impolite. Less direct statements would be more common, e.g.:
不太饿,谢谢!
现在不用,谢谢!
or
下次吧!
不太餓,謝謝!
現在不用,謝謝!
Or
下次吧!
Learning tip
Teach the students some common ways to moderate blunt answers, like:
不太… To reduce intensity
不用(了) To decline offers
下次吧 or 现在不/現在不… To postpone or delay a proposed action “next time!”
Have the students make short roleplays
L1 inference error
Applying English negation logic, learners might overuse 不 as a standalone for ‘no’.
