The pronoun shénme 什么/什麼 is used in interrogative sentences to ask about people or things meaning 'what'. It can also occur in affirmative sentences to express indefiniteness meaning ' something; anything', and in constructions expressing generalization meaning 'any; every'.

Errors in the structure of the sentence with the interrogative pronoun 什么/什麼

1. Learners may have difficulty placing the interrogative pronoun 什么/什麼 in the correct position.

  • They can place it at the beginning of the sentence.

*什么这是?

2. The correct use of the 什么都 / 什麼都 construction may also pose a problem.

  • They may also place after the subject.

3. One of the most common problems is placing the phrase  什么都 / 什麼都 in an incorrect position.
