Common Errors

The adverb can serve several functions in a sentence, and its meaning depends heavily on context.

1. Incorrect position

As an adverb, when appears in the second clause of conditional sentences echoing the conjunctions 如果 or 要是 ‘if’ placed in the first clause, it cannot appear before the subject of the main clause when there is an overt one.

*如果明天天气很好,我们去公园跑步。
如果明天天气很好,我们去公园跑步

*如果明天天氣很好,我們去公園跑步。
如果明天天氣很好,我們去公園跑步。

It is the same if appears in the pattern 一…… 就…… ‘as soon as…, then…’, and the two actions are performed by two different people.

*新老师说话,学生们想笑。
新老师说话,学生们想笑。

*新老師說話,學生們想笑。
新老師說話,學生們想笑。

2. Omission

When expresses that one action happens ‘right after’ another, the learners may forget to place the particle 了 or to use a complement to indicate that the first action is completed.

*我吃饭回家
我吃完饭回家

*我吃飯回家
我吃完飯回家

When appears in the pattern 一…… 就…… ‘as soon as…, then…’, 一 can be omitted if the verb phrase is a verb–object phrase, but if it is not a verb–object phrase, 一 cannot be omitted.

*她学会.
会.

他吃完饭去公园。
吃完饭去公园。

*她學會.
會.

他吃完飯去公園。
吃完飯去公園。

3. Misuse of modal particle 了 in imperative and suggestion sentences

Learners may incorrectly add the modal particle 了 in imperative or suggestion sentences. In these contexts, the actions have not yet taken place, but the modal particle 了 presents the situation as already established, which creates a pragmatic conflict.

*你今天身体不舒服,吃了药去睡觉

你今天身體不舒服,吃了藥去睡覺

(This sentence sounds unnatural because the modal particle 了 presents ‘going to sleep’ as an already established result, while the sentence is meant as a suggestion.)

你今天身体不舒服,吃了药去睡觉 (吧)。

你今天身體不舒服,吃了藥去睡覺 (吧)。

(Here, the sentence gives advice about what the listener should do next, without marking the actions as completed.)

4. Confusion between 就 and 才

Both and 才 can link two verb phrases to show that one event happens after another. However, they express opposite temporal relations: indicates that the second action happens ‘right after’ the first, with a short interval; 才 indicates that the second action happens ‘only after’ the first, with a long or unexpected delay.

他做完作业来到我家了。

他做完作業來到我家了。

He came to my place right after he finished his homework.

他做完作业来到我家。

他做完作業來到我家。

He didn’t come to my place until after he had finished his homework. / He came to my place only after he had finished his homework.

When 了 appears at the end of the sentence after , it indicates that the action following has also already taken place. In contrast, the modal particle 了 is optional with 才: without 了, the sentence presents the event as part of a completed sequence; with le 了, the speaker places additional emphasis on the result as a newly realized or noteworthy outcome.

等了一会儿,医生

等了一會兒,醫生

After waiting a short while, the doctor came.
(了 marks the arrival as an established result.)

等了很久,医生来。

等了很久,醫生來。

The doctor only came after a long wait.
(Neutral evaluation: the arrival happened later than expected.)

等了很久,医生

等了很久,醫生

The doctor only came after a long wait.
(了 adds a sense of “finally” or emotional release; the result is highlighted.)

5. Confusion in expressing later or earlier time

When a time reference is present, its position changes the meaning: if placed before , it implies that the action occurred or was completed earlier than expected; if placed after , it implies that the action occurred or was completed later than expected.

你下午五点吃晚饭了。

你下午五點吃晚飯了。

You already had dinner at five in the afternoon.

你吃午饭的时候下午三点半了。

你吃午飯的時候下午三點半了。

When you were eating lunch, it was already 3:30 in the afternoon.

6. Inappropriate usage of the pattern 一…… 就……

This pattern expresses that one action happens immediately after another, meaning ‘as soon as…, then…’. If there is a short interval between the two actions, this structure cannot be used.

*他们俩一认识结婚了。
他们俩认识不久结婚了。

*他們倆一認識結婚了。
他們倆認識不久結婚了。

7. Pragmatic errors

Note that when precedes a verb followed by a quantity, the context determines whether the quantity is perceived as small or large.

买这本书,你花了二十块钱。

買這本書,你花了二十塊錢。

You only spent 20 yuan to buy this book.

修这辆车,花了三千块钱。

修這輛車,花了三千塊錢。

Fixing this car already cost 3,000 yuan.
