Preposition gēn 跟 ‘with’ is used to express a joint action, the source of an action, the person someone speaks to, or comparisons. It forms a prepositional phrase together with a noun or pronoun.

Structure

Basic form

Preposition gēn ‘with’ forms a phrase with a noun or a pronoun. This prepositional phrase is placed before the verb.

When expressing a joint performance of an action, the adverb yìqǐ 一起 ‘together’ is often placed before the verb.

Negation

The negation is usually formed by adding negation adverbs or méi yǒu 没有/沒有 before the prepositional phrase with gēn ‘with’.

With adverbs

Adverbs such as dōu ‘all’,  ‘also’, chángcháng 常常 ‘often’, yòu ‘again’, yǐjīng 已经/已經 ‘already’ usually are placed before the prepositional phrase with gēn ‘with’.

With modal verbs

Modal verbs are usually placed before the prepositional phrase with gēn ‘with’.

Functions

1. Expressing  doing something together

Preposition gēn ‘with’ is used when expressing with whom an action is perfomed. In this use, it is typically translated as ‘with’.

我跟朋友去商店。
我跟朋友去商店。
Wǒ gēn péngyou qù shāngdiàn.
I go to the shop with my friend.

To emphasize that an action is done ‘together’ with someone else, the adverb yìqǐ 一起 ‘together’ is often placed before the verb.

我跟同学一起看电影了。
我跟同學一起看電影了。
Wǒ gēn tóngxué yìqǐ kàn diànyǐng le.
I watched a movie together with my classmate.

2. Expressing the person someone speaks to

Preposition gēn ‘with’ can also be used to indicate to whom an action is performed. In that sense it is often used along verbs which refer to actions of speaking, for example  shuō / ‘to speak’, shuōmíng 说明/說明 ‘to explain’, jièshào 介绍/介紹 ‘to introduce’, dào qiàn 道歉 ‘to apologize’. In this case, it is often translated as ‘to’.

她跟我说明了中国的文化。
她跟我說明了中國的文化。
Tā gēn wǒ shuōmíng le Zhōngguó de wénhuà.
She explained Chinese culture to me.
老师跟学生说,明天要考试。
老師跟學生說,明天要考試。
Lǎoshī gēn xuéshēng shuō, míngtiān yào kǎoshì.
The teacher told the students that there will be an exam tomorrow.
老师跟爸爸妈妈介绍了学校。
老師跟爸爸媽媽介紹了學校。
Lǎoshī gēn bàba māma jièshào le xuéxiào.
The teacher introduced the school to the parents.
我要跟您道歉。
我要跟您道歉。
Wǒ yào gēn nín dào qiàn.
I want to apologize to you.

3. Expressing the source of an action

Preposition gēn‘with’ can be used to indicate the source of an action. In this usage, it is often used with verbs xuéxí 学习/學習 ‘to learn’ jiè ‘to borrow’, and it can be translated as ‘from’.

我跟王老师学书法。
我跟王老師學書法。
Wǒ gēn Wáng lǎoshī xué shūfǎ.
I learn calligraphy from Teacher Wang.
我打算跟妈妈学做面包。
我打算跟媽媽學做麵包。
Wǒ dǎsuàn gēn māma xué zuò miànbāo.
I plan to learn to make bread from my mother.
同学跟我借书了。
同學跟我借書了。
Tóngxué gēn wǒ jiè shū le.
A classmate borrowed a book from me.

4. Expressing comparisons

Preposition gēn ‘with’ can be used to express that two things or persons are or are not similar to each other.

我的看法跟你的一样。
我的看法跟你的一樣。
Wǒ de kànfǎ gēn nǐ yíyàng.
My opinion is same as yours.
你的词典跟他的词典不一样。
你的詞典跟他的詞典不一樣。
Nǐ de cídiǎn gēn tā de cídiǎn bù yíyàng.
Your dictionary and his dictionary are not the same.
他的杯子跟你的杯子一样吗?
他的杯子跟你的杯子一樣嗎?
Tā de bēizi gēn nǐ de bēizi yíyàng ma?
Is his cup the same as yours?
